INFO DIVORCE CASE reported in newspaper. Otago Daily Times, 19 Nov 1902, p.7. " Eaton v Eaton A wife's petition for dissolution of marriage on the ground of desertion. Mr J.F.M. Fraser appeared for the petitioner, Mary Magdalena Eaton, and there was no appearance of or on behalf of the respondent, Percy Seymour Eaton. Mr Fraser stated that the facts of the case were very simple. The parties were married on May 8, 1894, by the Rev. Gibson Smith at Dunedin. They lived together for seven months at Caversham, and then the husband, who was a chemist's assistant, lost is situation and left for Christchurch. Since then he had never sent his wife a penny, had made no effort to make a home for her, and she had had to support herself. When seen by the petitioner's brother in Christchurch some three or four years ago respondent introduced himself as his brother-in-law, and in the course of conversation stated that he weould never be able to provide a home for his wife, and the best thing she could do was to get a divorce. Proceedings had, however, not been taken till now. Petitioner was 21 and respondent 18 years at the time of marriage, and it was hoped that the young man would settle down on getting married, but apparently he did not. Evidence was given by the petitoner, and by Emma Louise Evans and William Henry Meyer, her sister and brother respectively. His Honor granted a decree nisi, to be made absolute in three monhs."
