INFO OBITUARY. Sanford Express [Sanford, North Carolina] 28 June 1928. "Death of E.E. Atkins Mr. Edward E. Atkins died Thursday, June 21st, at the home of his son, Mr. G. Felton [sic] Atkins. Mr. Atkins had been in bad health for five years, but was critically ill only an hour and a half before he died. The funeral was held at Poplar Springs Methodist chuch Friday at 4 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. O. I. Hinson, and interment was made at the church cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. W.B. Dowdy, Martin Matthews, T.J. Minter, Carl Seymour, Ira Bridges and Paul Williams. Mr.Atkins was born at Dover, England, August 12th, 1885, passing away at the age of 73 years. He came to America when a boy at the age of 17, and for a long number of years made his home in this section. He was married to Miss Mary S. Brown, of Osgood some 50 years ago. They were the parents of six children, five of whom survive. Mrs. Atkins died some 16 years ago. The living children are as follows: Fulton and Will Atkins, of Sanford; Eugene Atkins, of Osgood; Mrs. Clayton McFarland, of Jonesboro, and Mrs. E.L. Mitchell of Cary. When Mr. Atkins grew up to young manhood he learned the carpenters’ trade and became one of the best contractors and builders in this section. He mastered his trade by close application and took great pride in turning out only first-class jobs. He constructed many of the best and most pretentious dwellings through-out this section of the State. It would be interesting to know the number of houses constructed by Mr. Atkins since he landed on the shores of America. They will stand as a monument of his industry. Mr. Atkins was a member of the Popular Springs Methodist church and died in the faith. He looked for the virtues and not the vices in his neighbors and had a good word for everyone with whom he came in contact. His devotion to his wife and children was one of his chief virtues. His children who nurtured him in his declining years reciprocated that beautiful devotion shown by him. Realizing his condition he said that he was ready to meet his God when He called him.
