INFO | REPORT OF TRAGIC FIRE. Evening Post [Wellington NZ], 17 Feb 1911, p.3. Auckland. 16th February. Report of injuries and casualties in the Ponsonby-street [Auckland] fire: Charles Porteous, 33, dangerously burned; Edith Porteous, 30, severely injured, condition critical; Charles Porteous, 8, slightly burned; Hettie Porteous, 7, burned to death; Arthur Porteous, 5, burned to death; Philip Waud, 12, slightly injured; Herbert Mountfield, 29, severely burned; Ruth Mountfield, 26, burned about the hands and feet. [A report of the fire follows and is summarized here.] The ground floor of the building on Ponsonby-street that burned was occupied by Charles Porteous for his fish-retailing business. The Porteous family lived in the upper story. The Mountfield famiy had recently moved to Auckland and were living with the Porteous family. Mrs Porteous and Mrs. Mountfield were sisters. The occupants heard an explosion in the shop area about 10 p.m. and tried to escape the fire from the windows of the front room upstairs over the verandah. The metal roof of the verandah became red-hot from the flames below. All in the family were severely burned in their escape attempt. Two of the young children were fatally burned. The Mountfield family was living with the Porteous family at the time of the fire: "Mr. and Mrs. Mountfield had just arrived a week or two ago from the North where Mr. Mountfield had occupied the position of accountant to the Kiripaka Sawmilling Company. They had stored their furniture in Mr. Porteous's house, and this was totally destroyed. Mr. Mountfield had an insurance of £100 on his proptery . . ."
