INFO LETTER FROM MRS. MITCHELL giving an account of mission work in southern Ethiopia cited in article "Believe ye that I am able to do this?" by Jean Trout of the Sudan Interior Mission in the mission magazine The Evangelical Christian April 1937. "Concerning the three stations in the Sidamo province, we need to continue praying for them as they have all been left without workers for many months now. We believe that Galacho, who helped Mr. Mitchell in the translation of John's Gospel into Guji was our first convert from the Darassa station. Galacho, with other servants, was killed and the manuscript lost at the time when our two fellow-workers, Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Devers, were killed on their way to Addis ..." (EvangChrDig 33(4):190-191 April 1937.)
INFO NEWSPAPER interview of missionary associate. Auckland Star 22 May 1937. In Abyssinia. Missionary's Experiences. Miss M.A. Macmillan. "When Mrs. M.E. Mitchell, wife of the New Zealand missionary who was killed by natives in Abyssinia in May, 1936, returned to this country, she was accompanied by Miss M.A. MacMillan, of Dunedin, who had been carrying out missionary work in the Gurage province since 1931 . . . . When the Italians had invaded the country, Miss Macmillan said, missionary work continued just as usual, except in the Sidama province, where Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were stationed, and where the three missions were concentrated at one centre, owing to the approach of the Italians. Later, when the danger became more acute, the women were sent to Addis Ababa, but the men returned to the central mission station. ... .. however, Addis Ababa was occupied before the mission, and Mr. Mitchell, fearing for the safety of his wife, and accompanied by a Canadian, Mr. Devers, whose fiancee was also inthe capital, set out for the city by the shortest route--across a desert inhabited by the Arussi Galas. It was a troop of these horsemen who, probably mistaking the caravan for an Italian scouting party, fell upon and massacred the two travellers. . . . All the information they had received had been gleaned from natives, and Mrs. Mitchell had not heard of her husband's death until four months afterwords. . . . (AuckStarDig 28May1937 p.15.)
