INFO OBITUARY. Alexandra and Yea Standard . .. 25 Feb 1949, page 2. DEATH of Mr. Charles F. Wightman. "The death occurred on Wednesday last week of a very old and highly respected resident of the district, Mr. Charles E. Wightman. The late Mr. Wightman resided in the district practically all his life and during that long period was an ardent exhibitor of Red Poll catle at the Alexandra Show. As may be gathered, he followed agricultural pursuits, with dairying as his main source. But, while industrious to a degree, sporting intrests in and around the district claimed quite a share of his attention. . . . Sufficient testimony to the esteem in which he was held was borne out by the fact that over fifty cars formed the cortege which followed his remains to the Alexandra cemetery on Thursday of last week. The late Mr. Wightman was born at Thornton on Oct 5, 1874. His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wisdom Wightman, were among the earliest selectors of Thornton. His boyhood days were spent at Thornton, where he atended the local school. Early in 1910 he leased a portion of the Eildon Estate from he Late Mrs. Popple, and engaged in dairy farming. Shortly afterwards he married Miss M. J. Gillmore of Rubicon. About 1922 they pruchased a property at Taggerty, where they made their home, and where two sons grew up. The Rev. F.C. Vickerman conducted the burial service and Cumming, Culhane and Co. Pty. Ltd. had charge of the funeral arrangements. The coffin was borne to its resting place by Messrs. K. Gilmore, R. Gilmore, N. Williamson, B. Williamson, R. Wighman and B. Gilmore, while the pall bearers were Messrs. R. J. Briggs, H. Christie, W.H. Whiting, L. WIlliamson, H. Gilmore and K. Andrews. The late Mr. Wightman was 74 years of age. " (AlexYeaStTro.)
