In youth worked w/ newspapers. Worked toward Methodist ministry, but not ordained. Worked in newspapers and owned them, various locations. Married Charlotte Eliza Park 11 Mar 1879 at Hokitika. Political career attempted 1881, succeeded 1893 with liberal seat in house for Riccarton. Vocal liberal, in and out of politics. Wrote novel in 1919. On Board of Canterbury College. Back to politics 1908. Major administrative dutes in WWI, including management of response to influenza epidemic. Wrote book for migrants. After wife died 1 May 1924, Russell retired from public life. 23 Mar 1927 married Hilda May Tidey (nee Farmar) in Wellington. Died age 83 at Eastborne, Wellington 28 June 1937.
